Don't worry too much; I know what a bitch it can be, had to do similar last summer. Speaking of which, I really should finish checking my old computer for stuff I want to keep so it can go to the dump...

Oh, I'm planning to keep that anyway - but I'm intending to turn it into an external, so need to check it 100% before I do a full reformat.

Though... I could simply run on the premise that 'I've not needed this stuff for six months so won't notice it's gone...' but I just know Useful Thing #45 is going to be there and I'll need it the week after I reformat. Plus, I've got random things on there which I would have kept for a reason, like random folders with say pictures of future character avatars...

...And that is why I make damn sure to use an external drive or something to transfer EVERYTHING in Documents etc., from the old to the new... and make sure I have a good check of what programs I have with what additional data, to save on what I have to download or collate again on a new computer. (For example, mod collections for games like Skyrim or Stardew Valley would be a REAL pain to have to reassemble at a later date, as opposed to simply copy everything right away. Not to mention my folder of DOS games and such... Razz )

Problem is, all externals full [which is why the old C: is going to become one]. And yeah, really need to go through all the mod folders I've got kicking around - I've got ones for Morrowind, Operation Flashpoint, Neverwinter Nights etc which I suspect I can't even *find* online any more. Which is part of the reason for my hesitation of simply junking said drive.

Plus, I'm currently going through all my old backup/archive CDR's too. That's taking forever. *rolls eyes*

Tools -> Add-ons -> Dictionaries -> Type in 'Dictionary' in the search bar -> Pick the one which seems best -> Download and Install.

Can't help you ID the 'best one' from the top of my head, because I'm using a British English one, which I'm assuming you don't want.

Like a digital junk drawer.

Just when I think I moved everything, I find out I didn't, lol. And I was trying to clean up things last time, since I had doubles on pictures and stuff : / Worse, though is that Win10 doesn't work with all the programs that I have, so I still have another machine so I can run certain programs that I like and haven't the money to replace or can't replace.

The most annoying one I set up was the win 8 machine - I actually miss having a physical disc for installing things, too. Now you need accounts for everything! Anyway, hope it's all good now.

I already have a 'digital junk drawer' [well, more a digital Misc drawer]. This is all the stuff which needs to be sorted through to *go* in said drawer.

Windows 8 was really terrible and it truly could get annoying.

I have such a junk drawer as well that I tell myself I will sort through one day.

Annoying, yes. But not terrible [I remember Vista and ME...] Though admittedly I *really* hate the right pop-bar thing. I think I can only live with it because I did a full install from a clean OEM disc and spent ages tweaking it.

I tried Windows 8 on a laptop... That was a fucking nightmare - the computer read the touchpad as BOTH mouse and touchscreen. Worst solution ever in Windows history; for some reason, they did not care to differentiate between touch and mouse interface versions... and inputs.

In a GURPS game placed in the Transformers setting that I did not play in but I did hear about the player characters threanthened to install Windows 8 on an enemy Transformer unless he gave them the information they wanted. It really is not a good operating system. Razz

I am not sure such one I dislike most between Windows 8 and Vista.

Vista was a well-intentioned mistake.
Not sure I can be quite so forgiving toward 8. Razz

Well yes that might be true, the question is which one of them that actually functioned worse?

Vista, without a doubt.

It was *incredibly* demanding for system resources [RAM, HD space etc] for the time. 'Recommended' was actually really 'bare minimum'. Though - it wasn't that bad if you *did* have that amount of Resources and had patched it up.

8, in comparison was much leaner.

However, I am not phased by 'things not working right' - I in fact expect it. Partly due to the fact that I as standard either reset to factory or reinstall the OS, hack out all the pre-install bloat, then spend a good week or two merely getting it 'useable' [that is, usable by me].

Perhaps that is why I never had a huge problem with it, I had it on my gaming computer back in the day who had far higher specs than the ones needed to run Vista and while there where things that anoyed me for the most part that computer fuctioned just fine.

Yeah it do take time to get rid of all the bloat and then making all the adjustments that are needed to make the computer be the way I want it to be.

I really hated the charm bar on the right hand side in win8. Lol, who thought that was a wise move? Go to pull down a window to scroll and bling! Out it popped. Wasn't a fan of tiles, either.
