Colin shrugged, "I believe Chief Morgan tore it to bits - he seemed none too happy about that. As for why it was here... I don't rightly know. Could be it was sent here to harass us, could be it was sent here with a more specific and insidious purpose."

"Hum...well at least it did not get through the wards did it? Though I am not happy that it was here in the first place."
Ingmar said and frowned.
"Well if the Chief dealt wit it I guess we are safe, even so just checking the Resonance around Freddy's apartment might not be a stupid idea...just to be safe."

He nodded, "It should be safe to return now - the wards should be restored, I believe, and Chief Morgan killed the damnable thing... I'd like to escort you back and have a quick look at the, er, battlefield, myself. It would be rude to look magically at the place without permission or at least someone present to preserve decency, though."

Dion nodded and stood.
"Off course Mr Wainwright and thank you for your aid in protecting Jane, we will go with you back to Miss Gottschalk's apartment and get Jane back to her bed. And yes I would appreciate if you could have a look at her room before she go back to sleep there, just to be sure."
The young Chorister said.
"Come along Jane..."

He looked down at Jane with a small smile, "So, do you like the book? You're quite welcome to borrow in until you're done."

"I do not understand all the words Mr Wainwright but it is a fun book, thank you."
The little mage girl said and gave you a big smile before she got to her feet to join you and Dion to get back to the older Chorister's apartment.
"I will take good care of it Sir."

"Hum...well at least it did not get through the wards did it? Though I am not happy that it was here in the first place."
Ingmar said and frowned.

He arched an eyebrow, "No? Old Tolkien was quite meticulous about explaining the new words; what is it that's confusing you?"

The pain hit him and he couldn't even get more than a grunt of realisation of how much it hurt before he was staring at the ceiling dazed, a voice talking and...something...wet...dog tongue...his hands felt like two burned lobsters. Once he thought the worst was over he pulled his hands up towards his eye level, expecting to see blisters but there weren't any visible traces of the burning feeling on the material plane. They still felt as if they'd been put in a stewpot, made of primal stuff of the Tellurian. "I'm...okay I think, just give me a moment, damn paradox," he mumbled, working on sitting up and giving himself a thorough check over for anything worse than his hands. Making a pained face he opened and closed them and frowned. "No, don't bother my pater...it's not too bad...feels like I put my hands in a really hot sauna for too long...was lucky." He sighed and stood up, slightly embarrassed at finding himself on his ass but glad that it hadn't happened in a battle. "Right, where was I?" he said, more to himself than them.

"It did go well, thank you." Bruce said then he nodded. "Yeah it have been a hard weak." He agreed in a low mutter.

"Some good news at least, it's welcome."

"I see, well spirits are not my department, but I will check in with Chief Morgan to see where I can be of the most use."
He said and nodded.

"Sure but you could notice if they start affecting the material plane...things withering, decaying, rotting away that were not doing so previously...those are not the kind of spirits we generally would have around here."

"No I can go now." Bruce said and ate his sandwiches in a few big gulps and took a few sips of his cola before putting the glass and plate down. "Ah...time to sit and eat, I do hope we finish up with these Nephandi soon."

"Very well, let's go then," he agreed.

Colin shrugged, "If there's any residue of the damnable thing, the place where it was torn apart might be the best place to look... In any case, you look like you need a breath of fresh air, so I'll get going and see you in a few." He gave Adley a quick nod and headed upstairs to Freddie's apartment.

"True enough, just be careful. I'll see you soon, then," he agreed.

"Quite so Mr Wainwright I do not want to take any chances with Jane's safety, and thank you again for your aid."

Jane said and pointed at some fairly common english words but they where long and hard to read and she was after all only six.

Adley:

"I'm...okay I think, just give me a moment, damn paradox," he mumbled, working on sitting up and giving himself a thorough check over for anything worse than his hands.

Other than some bruises where you landed you seamed to be fine. Darrian nodded and was silent letting you compose yourself but the alchemist was clearly concerned. Mundi stopped licking you but he remained by your side, nusseling his large head against your arm.

Making a pained face he opened and closed them and frowned. "No, don't bother my pater...it's not too bad...feels like I put my hands in a really hot sauna for too long...was lucky." He sighed and stood up, slightly embarrassed at finding himself on his ass but glad that it hadn't happened in a battle. "Right, where was I?" he said, more to himself than them.

"It was an odd experience though."

The artificer nodded at that.
"Yeah, I can be on the lookout for that and no it is not generally the kind of spirits we have around here no."
He agreed.

"Very well, let's go then," he agreed.

Bruce nodded and after he had put his plate and glass down on a nearby table to tidy up later he joined you as you left the building. Mundi was clearly happy and immediately started sniffing the ground for any news from other dogs.

Darrian offered a hand to help you up. He had a compassionate but concerned look in his eyes, every mage understood the trouble with Paradox and every mage had a backlash every now and again. "Hopefully it will pass quickly Mr Roth Hicks."

He sat with the dog a moment and then looked up at the proffered hand. "If you'll excuse me not taking your hand-up," he said, sounding apologetic. His hands hurt and while he wasn't going to draw attention to it, getting to his feet on his own when he was ready was probably a good idea anyway.

"You where strengthening the wards, but I am sure you do not need to worry about that right now...do you need anything?" He asked. "I have some ice in my fridge I could make an ice pack for your hands."

"Just time to recover," he said with a sigh. "I'm going to ask some friends for help with the wards though. I don't think ice will help, it's not..." He made a face. "They -feel- hot, the primal energies are very active...it feels like I poached them but there's no physical damage. At least I don't think so...thank you for your concern, but I will be okay," he said, trying to reassure the man that he had not gotten badly hurt.

He tried not to rush the dog along but he didn't like lingering either, no matter how much interesting pee-mail was left to 'read' he didn't want to make themselves targets.

He gave him a nod at that and shifted the dog's lead to his other hand and back again. "Good. Well, I don't want to pry but I am glad to hear it was successful."

Bruce nodded as he walked, he was never one to talk much.
"Thank you, it was...interesting...odd but...interesting."
Was all he said about it.

The wards around the Chantry seamed to be holding you could see them when you looked at the building, other than that you see the little gafflings working. Mundi sniffed around on the ground, trying to do his business as high up on buildings as he possibly could and stopping to sniff the ground every so often, then suddenly a trash can drew his attention and he scraped at it with his paw, whimpering.
"What do you think is in there? Some food perhaps?"
Bruce suggested looking at the dog's interest of the trash can.

[Adley]

"Take as much time as you need." The alchemist said and nodded. "That is probably wise yes, we would not want you to get more Paradox, or to strain yourself to much."

"It's a practical solution...strain myself too much..." He gave a laugh at that, then looked at Mundi. "Thank you, too."

Mundi did not seam aggressive he was more concerned and curious. Bruce looked at the can.
"Should we just open it and have a look inside perhaps?"
You felt something from the can, there was some bit of magick, or a spirit of some sort in there, that much your earlier rote can tell you.

(OOC: It is a neighbor's trash can. )

"Thanks," he started to say then was licked again and he gave a more good-natured laugh.

The large dog waggle his tail even more enthusiastically when you laugh and stamp his large paws on the floor. Darrian smiles a little if you where well enough to laugh then he probably did not have to worry.

He glanced at the neighbors house and then said to Bruce, "There's something magickal inside though I don't know if it's a spirit or what. It might be a spirit hiding or hurt from that other spirit...if so, we'll have to be careful as it could be infected," he told him.

The neighboring house was another apartment building offering cheap housing to low income families and students. Bruce nodded to your warning and carefully opened the lid to the trash can, he glanced inside but clearly saw nothing so he just stepped back. You however saw a small, terrified spirit inside, it was tiny and round and looked like it was a ball of old fallen leaves with hazelnut eyes. The tiny ball of living compost looked up at you and then squealed and curled up when it realized that you could see it.
"Is there anything there Adley?"
Bruce asked and glanced towards the trash can.
"Do you see anything?"

"True enough, just be careful. I'll see you soon, then," he agreed.

Colin nodded and gave Adley a quick thumb up.

Dion raised an eyebrow not completely sure that a dictionary was a good gift for a six year old.

He nodded sagely, "I'm thinking something along the lines of some angry genre of metal - normally not the genre I'd expect from the good lady, but I'm sure she'd consider it an acceptable circumstance for it."

"And I have a dictionary. Master Morgan gave me one for my last birthday."

He grinned, "An unusual choice, perhaps, but a good one - should last you a lifetime, and ought to be a decent reference for most written works."

He said with a bit of a grin.

He nodded sagely, "I'm thinking something along the lines of some angry genre of metal - normally not the genre I'd expect from the good lady, but I'm sure she'd consider it an acceptable circumstance for it."

"Well Mr Wainwright we should probably go, I do want to get Jane back to bed."
The conjurer reminded you politely.

He led the girls back to their own apartment, focusing on the monocle and chanting, "Magia residuum spectare..."

((OOC: So, basically Prime 1, to see specifically residual resonances once he puts the monocle on, filtering out the resonances of people and ongoing spells. Arete rolls: 6,7,0 - 1,3,9 GAK - 5,6,8 - 2,2,6 - 5,8,0... and stopping there. Not feeling that brave... Pretty sure I didn't botch the second roll, just failed rolls 2 and 3... Shouldn't be much of a problem finding time for the casting on the walk to Hildegard's apartment, though.))

"Is there anything there Adley?" Bruce asked and glanced towards the trash can. "Do you see anything?"

He kept a good hold on the dog's leash in case the frightened spirit bolted and the familiar wanted to take off after it and tried to ignore the leash digging into his hands but it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world. "It appears to be a scared little spirit...made of autumn leaves, compost," he replied to Bruce. He wasn't sure why the spirit was still there, most of them had taken off away from the whole area and though it seemed harmless and frightened he was a bit more cautious. He gave the little ball of leaves a closer look to see if it was hurt or had the same disgusting resonance as the Bane.  To the spirit in Enochian he said, "We am not here to harm you if you are friendly...what has scared you so?" he asked, though he was not sure if it would be able to communicate through words. Probably anyone who happened to see him would think he was routing through trash cans for recycling or speaking to a cat or racoon stuck in the trash can. He was cautious nonetheless, even though the spirit looked quite harmless and in fact terrified of them, it might have gotten infected by the Bane. Or was not what it seemed at all...and he did not want to linger.

He nodded thoughtfully, "Not my go-to choice in theatrical performances, but no, I don't really think I would be very surprised. The genre has a bit of a reputation..."

Dion just grinned a bit at that.
"It is not my music of choice either, but for a bit of vengeance if your foci are song, it might be just the thing Mr Wainwright."

He nodded and considered the Prime monocle for a moment, then pocketed the case with the others, "Right you are; let's be about it... Hm, I need to make some more complex glasses, I think..."

"Glasses? I am afraid I do not understand what you mean Mr Wainwright."
Dion asked looking a bit confused as she took Jane's hand and went with you back to the older Chorister's apartment. You fiddle with your monocle and cast your magick, the most difficult thing being the filtering, you almost loose your grip on the energies you are working with, but you pull it together and by the time you reach the right door your spell are ready.

He led the girls back to their own apartment, focusing on the monocle and chanting, "Magia residuum spectare..."

You get to Hildegard's apartment and go inside, you see off course the Resonances of the mages living there, Hildegard herself as a noble Static and the joyful, Dynamic energies of Jane. You get to the little girl's room, the Resonance of that dark spirit and it's destruction was still lingering a bit, but there was nothing active here and looking outside the wards looked like they always did.
"Is it safe to come in Mr Wainwright?"
Dion asked.

Bruce muttered as he glanced towards the trash can. Mundi stopped pulling on the leash as if he knew he was hurting your hands when he did so and he only sniffed eagerly in the direction of the can.

He gave the little ball of leaves a closer look to see if it was hurt or had the same disgusting resonance as the Bane.

The little spirit did not seam to be hurt, it was Entropic in it's Resonance but a healthy kind, you could not see corruption in it, though off course it was hard to be sure.

"We am not here to harm you if you are friendly...what has scared you so?" he asked, though he was not sure if it would be able to communicate through words.

"The beacon inside you...do not like me...it is scary...but not so scary as the bad thing...the bad thing was here."
The terrified spirit said in broken Enochian, no the powerful Dynamic spirit who's shard you where carrying might not be so fond of an Entropic spirit though it was not aggressive towards it either you felt.
"The bad thing wanted to eat Rolly when Rolly would not do what the dark one who could see him wanted, so Rolly is hiding until Mistress saves him."
The tiny spirit continues shaking with fear.
"Rolly wants to go home to Mistress..."

(OOC: Well the diff for a coincidental rote using 1 dot Spheres are 4 so all but the second roll have successes if all Colin is trying to do is look at the Resonance in Jane's room.)

"They are not fantastic, though I suppose some might be borne of fantasy. They vibrate at a different level than we usually notice but such can be strange if you aren't used to interacting with ephemeral beings."

"We are not trying to scare you," he said. "The bad thing you mentioned, do you mean the bad grey spirit? It is gone if that is the one you mean. I am glad that you got away from it." He frowned a little. "What did the dark one with the bad thing want you to do, will you tell us?" he asked. "Perhaps I can tell your Mistress about your predicament, if I am able," he suggested. He wasn't sure who 'Mistress' was, if they were friend or foe or neither but if it was one of the chantry's magii, Rolly could be checked out for taint and kept safe.

Bruce said and fruitlessly glanced into the trash can again.

"We are not trying to scare you," he said. "The bad thing you mentioned, do you mean the bad grey spirit? It is gone if that is the one you mean. I am glad that you got away from it." He frowned a little.

"Yes the gray thing, the one that consume and make like itself, it wanted to get Rolly so Rolly hid."
The little spirit said and looked fearfully up at you with it's hazelnut eyes.
"Are you sure it is gone?"

"What did the dark one with the bad thing want you to do, will you tell us?" he asked.

"Yes...I can tell you. Rolly have not been told by Mistress not to say such things."
The spirit said, it had to be a gaffling but it was used to interacting with humans and seamed fairly intelligent for such low ranking Umbrood.
"He wanted Rolly to find someone in the place where many of those with fire that Rolly can not touch or see inside live, but that place is a place where Mistress often visits so Rolly did not want to do so and the dark man was wrong, he was wrong...Rolly did not like him."
The gaffling said as he put a little thumb made of the stem of a withered leaf into his mouth for comfort.
"He scared Rolly."

"Perhaps I can tell your Mistress about your predicament, if I am able," he suggested. He wasn't sure who 'Mistress' was, if they were friend or foe or neither but if it was one of the chantry's magii, Rolly could be checked out for taint and kept safe.

"Yes...please tell Mistress, she will save Rolly, she is good to Rolly and give him yummy food to eat."
The little spirit said and nodded eagerly.
"Rolly just want to go home but he is scared, the dark one might still be out there and everything is wrong, all those like Rolly are leaving, it is not safe..."
The tiny ball of dead leaves said and started crying tears made out of compost dirt.

Colin grinned, "Actually, the funnier reactions would probably be from the rest of you... Well, entertainment for another night."

"Glasses? I am afraid I do not understand what you mean Mr Wainwright."

He held up the monocle with a smile, "Spectacles... The monocle frames are engraved as very specialized Foci. I'm going to have to make some glasses to replace them - something designed for looking at more than one aspect of magic at a time. This one, for example, is attuned to only the raw stuff of magic itself - resonance and quintessence, basically. Another is only good for observing temporal distortions, another for spatial distortions... A pair of glasses covering everything ought to be more practical."

"Is it safe to come in Mr Wainwright?"

He nodded, "As far as I can tell, yes, though you might want to get a candle and inspect the place for spirits that might be sticking around - I can't see those. All I can see now are, well, the magical equivalent of footprints; not so much of yours, actually, but Madame Gottschalk's nobly Static energies and Jane's... well, she's truly a lively child, it seems. The corrupt spirit's grimy fingerprints on the window panes... I think I might be able to recognize those later... and of course, the Chief and Adley did some heavy lifting in here, as well; there's a little lingering echo of their part in the grisly battle, as well."

((OOC: You didn't explicitly mention their residual resonances, but Morgan and Adley WOULD have left behind their, well, footprints in that scuffle. ))

"Now I am starting to worry just what kind of dessert you are going to serve Mr Warinwright."

"But something multi purpose would indeed probably be more practical."

He nodded, "As far as I can tell, yes, though you might want to get a candle and inspect the place for spirits that might be sticking around - I can't see those. Dion said and went to a drawer to look for a candle.
"I have not cast much magick in here this is not my apartment after all, it belongs to Hildegard I am just babysitting."
She explained.
"And yes Jane is lively, I do believe she is happy."

The tiny umbrood asked and looked up fearfully.
"Rolly do not like bad spirits, he do not like bad spirits at all."

"I see...that does not sound good I am glad that you did not do that. Do you know whom the dark man wanted to find?

"He said her name is Martha, physical beings have so strange names, and that all the ones with fire Rolly can not touch inside in the same house where Curly lives have her captive, he wanted Rolly to find her and tell him where she was exactly, but Rolly did not do it for he thinks Mistress would not like it."

How did you get away from them before he made you do something you didn't want to do?"

"Rolly was scared and the man had a summoning circle, he would force Rolly and Rolly do not like it when those with fire inside do that, but he got sloppy and there was a opening in the circle where a stone broke the line and so Rolly ran as fast as he could and hid where it felt like home..."
The little spirit said and started crying compost tears again, he had not idea of time so remembering something traumatic was the same as experiencing it the first time.
"Rolly do not like that now..."
The gaffling bawled.

"If I am to see if I can contact your Mistress, I will need to know who she is or some way to reach her, does she have a nickname that you are allowed to tell me?"

"Rolly call her Mistress and she feed him and pet him and give him good compost to make into earth and fertilizer...but those with fire inside that live in the same house call her Dorothy or Deaconess, I do not know her true name."
The gaffling said still with it's twig thumb in it's mouth. He was speaking about Dorothy Haven then probably, the Deacon Prima of Chantry Riverside.

He smiled, "Well, I am a quite skilled silversmith, after a couple of decades... And I do offer discounts on work for Chantry members; I do commissions. And there's nothing wrong with single-purpose Foci - they would be better for honing a singular spell than something more generally-purposed, I suppose."

"I have not cast much magick in here this is not my apartment after all, it belongs to Hildegard I am just babysitting."
She explained.
"And yes Jane is lively, I do believe she is happy."

He nodded, "I suppose it would be rude to just cheerfully mess around with the immediate realities of someone else's apartment unbidden..."

"But let me check for spirits first...me and Jane should be fine now though, thank you for all your help Mr Wainwright you are a gentleman."

He grinned and stood at attention, saluting sharply, "For the honor of the Queen, miss. The Empire may have fallen, but that's no reason to let standards slip."
